Using the Bond-It Sealant Applicators

Before applying any sealant, prepare the surface in accordance to sealant manufacturer's instructions, and ensure the area is clean and dry before starting. Having applied a suitable amount of sealant along the joint, select the appropriate tool. The tool should be held at an angle that will encourage the sealant into the joint, with the flat side of the tool facing the sealant. Apply light pressure as you glide the tool along the edge. Excess sealant will build up on the back of the tool, remove this at several stages during the process.

A few key points

  • How to finish an expansion joint - Once sealant is applied, use the straight side of the Expansion tool to roughly clean up the area. You can then use the rounded edge of the tool to smooth the sealant whilst applying slight pressure as you go, to create a convex shape all along the strip.
  • How to make neat external angles - External corners can be smoothed using one of the internal radius cutouts. The Expansion Joints tool provides a small radius, whilst the Connection Joints tool provides a bigger radius for wider corners.
  • How to apply in narrow areas - The smaller, narrow shaped tools are designed to allow you to access those hard to reach areas, such as behind taps and pipes.
  • How to remove dirt or uncured sealant - The angle numbered 0 (zero) can be used to remove dirt, or uncured residual sealant. New sealant can then be applied, and finished with an appropriate spreader tool.

The tools require a simple wipe after each use, and can also be fully washed with warm soapy water.
