The Securistyle Defender Restricted Top-Hung Friction Hinge is built to maximise safety and reliability in residential settings. Available in 12", 16", 20", and 24" lengths with 13 mm or 17 mm stack heights, it fits most top-hung PVC-u windows. Tested to BS EN 13126-5, the restrictor meets Building Regulations Part K by limiting openings to 100 mm where fall heights exceed 600 mm, reducing the risk of accidents in homes, apartments, and multi-occupancy buildings. A quick-release lever allows full sash opening for cleaning or ventilation, with the restrictor automatically re-engaging when closed.

Note: As with all types of friction hinges, friction cannot be provided until the slider moves, therefore when opening top hung vents to angles of 10° or less a separate device may be required to prevent the window from closing.

Fitting & Usage

Part 1 – Determining the Correct Replacement Hinge

Step 1: Confirm whether the window is Top-hung or top-hung
Identify the hinge type from the inside of the building. If the handle is on the Top, the window is Top-hung (hinges fixed top and bottom). If the handle is on the bottom, the window is top-hung (hinges fixed left and right).
Note: Top-hung hinges carry the sash weight on the bottom hinge and include a load-bearing washer; top-hung hinges distribute the weight on the Tops.
Step 2: Measure the track width
Measure the outer width of the friction stay track (the metal strip fixed to the frame). Modern uPVC windows typically use an 18 mm track width; some older uPVC or aluminium windows may use 15 mm.
Tip: Track width is the critical measurement if you are changing hinge type (for example to a restrictor or egress hinge).
Step 3: Measure the track length
Measure the total length of the friction stay track on the fixed frame, including the end cap. Hinges are usually specified in inches (e.g. 12" or 16"); convert mm to inches by dividing by 25.4 and round up to the nearest inch if needed.
Note: If an exact older size is unavailable (for example a 10"), you can often fit the next size up (12") if there is room inside the rebate.
Step 4: Determine the stack height (thickness)
Common stack heights are 13 mm and 17 mm. Check the hinge arm on the opening sash:
- Flat arm = usually 13 mm
- Arm with a kink/dip = usually 17 mm

Part 2 – Installing the Replacement Hinges

Check the replacement hinge
Confirm the new hinge matches the original in orientation (Top- or top-hung), track width, length, and stack height.
Remove fixing screws
Open the sash fully and remove the fixing and adjustment screws from the top and bottom hinge channels in the frame.
Remove the sash
With the sash open, grip both edges and tilt the sash to release one hinge channel from the frame groove, then lift the sash out carefully.
Warning: The sash may be heavy. Use two people if needed, wear appropriate PPE, and take care when working from ladders or platforms.
Remove old hinges
When the sash is out of the aperture, unscrew and remove the top and bottom hinge arms from the sash.
Fit the new hinges
Align each new hinge so the arrow on the hinge points toward the opening direction and the end cap butts into the sash corner. Secure the hinge to the sash with suitable screws.
Refit the sash
Locate either the top or bottom hinge arm back into the frame groove and refit the fixing screws into the existing holes to secure the sash in place.
Test and adjust
Open and close the window to check operation. Adjust the friction screw to achieve the desired resistance.

Safety reminder: If you are unsure at any stage, seek assistance from a trained installer. Always use appropriate PPE and follow safe working practices when handling sashes or working at height.

We endeavour to despatch most orders within 1 working day. Where possible, orders received before 1:00pm may be despatched the same day. Accurate despatch times are available on individual product pages.

Most orders (those being stock items below 1.2m in length) will be despatched same day when ordered before 1pm, and received the following delivery day. We deliver items of that size from Monday to Saturday. Stock items over 1.2m are sent using a two-day carrier, who do not deliver on a weekend.

Due to the size and nature of some bespoke, and non-stock products, we offer restricted delivery options. Delivery options can be selected at the checkout page before payment Is made.

DELIVERY AND RETURNS

Any dates quoted for delivery of the goods are approximate only and Truly PVC shall not be liable for any direct, indirect or consequential loss suffered by the customer arising from any delay in the delivery of the goods.

All deliveries must be received, and where appropriate, signed for, by a person over the age of 18 years old.

Delivery takes place, and risk passes to you, at the earliest of the following:

When the goods are handed over to you or your agent at Truly PVC’s premises.
When the goods leave the premises of Truly PVC.
On the 7th day after you have been notified that the goods are ready for despatch.

Customers should notify us within 7 days of the invoice date for any alleged defect, damage, failure to comply with description, missing items, or discrepancies. If no notification is made within this period, the goods are deemed accepted and free from defect.

Customers are responsible for obtaining any necessary licences or permissions for importing goods into their country of destination.

Long Lengths (over 1.2m)

For any product over 1.2m in length we cannot guarantee a ‘Next Day’ delivery service. Products over 1.2m have to be manually handled in some Depots and this can often add 1 – 2 days to the delivery time.

DELIVERY PROHIBITIONS

Orders for aerosol items, items over 1m, or deliveries to remote locations (e.g., Scottish Highlands, offshore islands, Northern Ireland) may not be fulfilable or may incur a surcharge.

Should this be the case, we will contact you with the option of either paying the surcharge or cancelling the order. Remote postcodes include AB30-AB38, AB40-AB56, BT, FK17-FK21, G83, GY, HS, IM, IV, JE, KA27-KA28, KW, PA20-PA99, PH, TR21-TR25, ZE.

COLLECTION (from our Warehouse)

To collect your order, choose 'Collect in Person' as the shipping method. We will contact you if there is an issue preparing your order, so please provide a contact telephone number.
