Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tudor Board backing sheet used for?

Tudor Board backing sheet creates a clean, uniform “rendered” background behind the decorative boards. It conceals uneven brickwork, damaged render or old surfaces and delivers the classic high-contrast Tudor look without the cost, time or mess of traditional wet rendering.

Both the lightweight uPVC foam sheet and the more rigid Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) are commonly used for this purpose, giving a smooth white or beige finish that makes the Tudor boards stand out.

While not essential on a perfectly smooth, even wall, a backing sheet is strongly recommended in most cases for the best visual result.

What is the difference between uPVC and aluminium composite backing?

Both uPVC foam sheets and Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) are used as smooth backing boards behind Tudor boards to create a clean, rendered appearance and hide uneven or damaged walls. The main differences lie in construction, weight, rigidity and cost.

uPVC foam sheet is a lightweight 3 mm foamed plastic panel (approximately 6.2 kg per 1.22 m × 2.44 m sheet). It is economical, easy to cut and handle, and available in matt white or beige. It carries a 10-year guarantee and is ideal for most standard installations.

Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) is also 3 mm thick and the same sheet size, but it has a recycled plastic core sandwiched between two thin aluminium skins. This makes it noticeably more rigid and impact-resistant (around 11.2 kg per sheet) and gives a crisper, more premium finish. The face is polyester matt white.

In short, choose the uPVC sheet for a lighter, more cost-effective solution, or the ACP when you want greater rigidity and a higher-quality finish.

How do I cut and install Tudor Board backing sheet?

Both the uPVC foam sheet and Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) are straightforward to cut and fix.

Cutting

  • Use a fine-tooth hand saw or jigsaw for the uPVC foam sheet.
  • Use a fine-tooth metal-cutting blade for ACP panels.
  • Support the sheet fully while cutting and wear gloves, especially with ACP, as the edges can be sharp.

Installation

  1. Ensure the wall is clean, dry and structurally sound.
  2. Plan the layout so joints fall in sensible positions.
  3. Fix the sheets using suitable screws or a high-strength exterior adhesive (such as Fix ALL High Tack).
  4. On ACP panels, keep the protective film arrows facing the same direction on every sheet to avoid visible shade variation.
  5. Once the backing is secure, fit the Tudor boards over the top in the usual way.

Both types of backing sheet can be cut to size on site and are designed for rapid installation.
