FAQs

How accurate are tape measures?

Tape measures vary significantly in accuracy due to factors such as material quality, hook-end movement, tape tension, and environmental conditions like temperature.

Tape measure accuracy is classified into accuracy classes under EU Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU:

Class I
Tolerance at 1m is ±0.1mm. Most precise, for high-accuracy work (rare in general construction).

Class II
Tolerance at 1m is ±0.3mm. Standard professional grade, most commonly used in construction and industry.

Class III
Tolerance at 1m: ±0.6mm. General-purpose, typical for DIY or household use

A well-maintained Class II tape is accurate within ±1.5mm over 5m, which is sufficient for most construction and trade work. For precision-critical tasks, choose a Class I tape or use tools like calipers, micrometers, or laser distance meters.

What does standout mean?

Standout refers to the maximum distance the blade can extend horizontally without bending or collapsing under its own weight. The standout of a tape measure is affected by the blade width, material, and shape. A long standout is extremely useful for solo work and improves efficiency.

Why does the hook move?

Your tape measure is not broken! This is a subtle but clever feature – called “true zero” – present on quality tape measures. It refers to the slightly loose or moveable end hook that compensates for the thickness of the hook itself during inside and outside measurements.

When you pull the tape (e.g., measuring the length of a board), the hook pulls outward, and the measurement starts from the inside edge of the hook. When you push the tape (e.g., measuring inside a box), the hook compresses inward, and the measurement starts
from the outside edge of the hook.

What are the difference types of “break” in tape measures?

There are several types of "break" mechanisms (or stopping/braking systems) used in tape measures, designed to control the retraction and extension of the tape. These
mechanisms vary depending on the design, quality, and purpose of the tape measure.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:

  1. Slide/Thumb Lock – This is the most common braking system. A sliding button engages a brake pad against the tape and locks it in place. The thumb lock must be manually released to retract the tape.
  2. Finger Brake – Very common on professional or industrial tapes, the finger break – often on the underside of the case – allows fine control over the extension and retraction of the blade for easier use.  A finger brake can also indirectly improve the longevity of the tape measure by preventing tape whip and reducing wear on the rule.
  3. Auto Lock – The tape measure automatically locks in place when extended and features a release button to retract the blade. This is extremely convenient for one-hand use.
